Use Diablo 3 farming strategies to make money

My interest in the financial side of virtual economies got started with the launch of Star Wars Galaxies and the near perfect crafting system of that game. The crafting game got me hooked, and kept me hooked for a a while and you could actually make a decent living grinding credits and selling them. Then the NGE came and everything went to hell. That is when I sold my account and moved on, and since then I have played every major MMO, and I plan to make Diablo 3 my next online game.

With Diablo 3 having a real money auction house, it is possible to make money gaming by using official non-grey market channels. We won’t know how much until a while after launch, since the market will be very unstable the first few months. In this period, you are better off working on your characters and getting them to max level.

It is my hope, that Blizzard will be competent enough to clamp down on botters and dupers, so the economy will be stable and reflect people getting paid for the time…not people getting paid for knowing exploits. Since Blizzard will be making most of their money long term off of Diablo 3 via the real money auction house, they will protect their customer base, and dupers at least shouldn’t be a problem. Botting is another matter, just look at WoW.

Furthermore, I hope Blizzard will be able to properly regionalize servers, so North American and Euro servers won’t get flooded by Chinese farmers, working in sweatshop conditions.

At gamelaunch, and until the economy stabilizes, I will focus mostly on leveling. As more and more of the playerbase reach endcap, this site will have:

  • Guides to leveling: You make the most money at max level, so get there the fastest.
  • Guides to getting the most out of the Auction House: There will be transaction fees on the Auction House. Get the most out of your trades.
  • Weekly guides to what’s moving on the Auction House: Virtual economies aren’t very stable and hot items move in and out of style. I’ll data mine the Auction House and find what’s moving.
  • Arbitrage opportunities: There is a free flow of goods between real money auction house and in-game gold auction house. If there is an inconsistency between these prices, you will make money!

  1. Very nice blog mate, keep articles coming. I have been thinking about this opportunity too and most of my thoughts are same as yours. One thing I would like to add, Itwill be crucial to stay in auction house for long time. Look for items, watch prices etc. You seem to understand that but I fear(and also hope ) that many people dont. They think they will make lots of money just by selling their stuff but that is like 1% of potentional. 99% is knowledge of auction house and resseling. There is also one unpleasant thing. Cooldown on bought items. We have to wait for info about this..It may complicate few things a little.

    Best luck

    BS.

  2. Good site man, please keep up the good work. I added you to my blog roll and I would recommend creating one for yourself as well. It helps combine the traffic of each site with one another.

Look forward to your continued posting.

  3. Jack,

    First off, great blog.

Would you comment on the most useful support class. It’s amazing the wizard pulled off the Inferno kill solo and monky monks are full of win, but for those of us less ambitious about solo endeavors, which class do you love to see in your group because they make the runs better/faster/stronger?

    Truly yours,

    Me

    • Thanks. I want to keep it simple, so it’s easier on the eyes. And the rankings comes from SEO being my hobby…apart from Diablo 3 ;)

  4. agree! Your simple template make it more pleasant to read! Thanks for providing AWESOME content keep it up!

BTW, I add you on my blogrooll too hope you do the same!

  5. How about an article with the best locations to find treasure goblins? Since A1 Inferno is the most heavily farmed (currently), we could start with that. Here’s my weak-ass farming guide.

    This is my usual route:
Start by setting your quest to Act 1:9 – Imprisoned Angel, and choose The Cursed Hold. Bounce between this one, and the step before it on alternating runs.

Then I start my run here:

Cathedral lvl 3 boss – usually near the waypoint somewhere. If you don’t find him quickly, move on.
Cemetary of the forsaken – Sometimes there’s a boss just wandering around the cemetary, but if not, no worries! Run all 3 tombs. Don’t bother with the 2nd level of the quest tomb. Each of these will have a group of Elites and a Boss, and I find a treasure goblin at least half the time.
By this point you should be at 5 stacks of the MF buff.
Next, Festering Woods. Clear the area until you kill the group of Elites and the Boss. Probably a 50/50 shot of a treasure goblin here too. Then clean out both caves.
Move into Leorics Manor waypoint, moving backward into the manor, all the way out the front entrance. You’ll usually find at least one boss, and maybe an elite group as well.
Then move into the Halls of Agony lvl 2 waypoint and work all the way down and kill the Butcher.

Using this I’ve found at least 6 legendary items, and 2 set items in the past hundred or so hours of playing (my unbuffed MF is something like 222.) With my wiz, it takes about 45 min give or take 5 min, and I find enough rare items to completely fill my inventory, as well as about 60k or 70k in gold, not to mention a slew of blue items which I usually just sell. Usually take out 2 or 3 treasure goblins over the course of one run.
(I’m going to start adding in Sarkoth and maybe Fields of Misery for the Resplendant Chests too! thanks for the tip)

    Any helpful tips or comments?
