How to get the Hellfire Ring in Diablo 3

How to get the Hellfire Ring in Diablo 3

Updated February 2015:

With Reaper of Souls coming out, the process of getting the Hellfire ring has changed a little, but not much!

Let me say up front, that it is no longer worth your time trying to craft it. Unless of course you are a completionist, then by all means go ahead!

Here are the steps for crafting the new Hellfire ring:

Step 1: Gathering the keys

You need to gather 4 keys which drop from 4 keywardens.

  • Odeg drops the Key of Bones in Act 1 – Fields of Misery
  • Sokahr drops the Key of Gluttony in Act 2 – Dahlgur Oasis
  • Xah’Rith drops the Key of War in Act 3 – Stonefort
  • Nekarat drops the Key of Evil in Act 4 – Silver Spire

They keys only drop on Torment 1 or above difficulty and the plans for the Infernal Machine drops alongside them.

Step 2: Crafting the Infernal Machines

In order to craft an Infernal Machine, you need one each of the 4 keys.

There are 4 Infernal Machines that lead to a different realm each:

  • Infernal Machine of Bones leads to the Realm of Discord, where Leoric’s Signet drops from the King of the Dead and the Merciless Witch
  • Infernal Machine of War leads to the Realm of Turmoil, where the Idol of Terror drops.
  • Infernal Machine of Gluttony leads to the Realm of Chaos, where the Vial of Putridness drops.
  • Infernal Machine of Evil leads to the realm of fright, where the Heart of Evil drops.

Step 3: Crafting the Ring

Squirt the Peddler in Act 2 sells the plans for new and the old Hellfire ring. The new ring costs 5 million gold.

The ring costs 50000 gold to craft and it rolls with a 45% bonus to experience and a proc for a fire ring that deals 200% weapon damage.

In addition to this it rolls with 5 random stats, that are affected by smart loot.

Step 4: Find another ring instead of this crap :)

There are so many other legendary rings out there, so in the process of getting the Hellfire Ring….you have probably found another ring with better stats….so wear that!

Below is the old description for getting the Hellfire ring.

Old version of the hellfire ring – not up to date!

A couple of days ago, I wrote about crafting the Infernal Machine and how to find the keywardens.

With an Infernal Machine, you are ready to enter three different realms, where each realm contains 2 uberbosses. These uberbosses drop loot and they also have a a chance to drop parts for the Hellfire Ring. A new awesome ring introduced in patch 1.0.5.

Guide to crafting and farming the new Hellfire Ring in 1.0.5

First off, there is one really important thing you need to know about the Infernal Machine and the portals it opens. When you activate the Machine it opens a portal to one of three realms at random and then the Infernal Machine is consumed. You can then activate another Infernal Machine, and it won’t open a portal to the realm already activated, but you will get a portal to one of the other realms. Do this for the last realm as well and you have all three realms activated. Of course you need 3 machines for this, but if you run it with a decent group, you should have no problem doing this.

In order to craft the Ring, you need three parts:

  • Devil’s Fang
  • Vengeful Eye
  • Writhing Spine

The parts drop from the three different sets of uberbosses:

  • Skeleton King and Magda the Witch – Writhing Spine
  • Zoltun Kulle and Siegebreaker – Vengeful Eye
  • Ghom and Rakanoth – Devil’s Fang

The bosses drop the parts for the Hellfire Ring, the same way the Keywardens drop parts for the key: you need a full 5 stack of NV and then the drop rate is determined by the monster power level with 10% per MP level. So if you run at MP10, you are guaranteed a drop, while at MP5 you have a 50% chance.

And the recipe itself, which you can buy from Squirt the Peddler in Act 2 in the last quest in Act 2.

Squirt the Peddler in Act 2 lets you buy the plans for the Hellfire Ring for the measly sum of 2 million gold.

Once you have the plan, you can teach your level 10 jeweler the recipe and he can now make all 4 versions of the ring for 50,000 gold plus the three components per ring.

Covetous Shen lets you craft all 4 versions of the Hellfire Ring….for a price. How generous of him!

The different are the same, except they vary on the main stat. In the case of the strength Hellfire Ring it looks like this before crafting:

Diablo 3 Hellfire ring of Strength
The Hellfire Ring may be a bitch to gather the materials for, but it is worth it…provided it rolls good when you craft it!

And once you hit the craft button, something like this could come out:

Diablo 3 Hellfire Ring of Strength legendary
Some times the Hellfire Ring doesn’t roll mindblowingly good stats, but it is still a very, very good ring. You would really want some crit on this badboy!

This is why you want the Hellfire Ring!

As you can see, the stats can roll very different from each other. You can get a bum one, with cold resistance and no crit…but the best stats of this ring are luckily always on it.

First off there is a +35% to EXP. If you can comfortably gather the materials for this one, the only thing left in the game for you is Paragon level 100. Leveling Paragon fast to level 100 is something you really want, since it can be mindnumbingly boring! Replacing Your Leoric’s Signet with this one will give you some much needed DPS or you can add it to the other ring slot and get +70% to EXP.

Blizzard have now nerfed the proc damage from the ring and reduced the damage 90%. Don’t get the ring for the proc. Get the ring because you think it is fun running ubers, you feel you might get lucky on the 4 random stats and you want an experience ring for leveling paragon fast.

The other sweet part about this ring is the Hellfire proc. As it is now, the proc doesn’t seem to be capped. Furthermore there is a chance for it to proc everytime you swing. This means that you really want to swing fast and that you want to lean towards attackspeed on your gear, since the Hellfire proc can hit for 2-3 million. On a D3 stream, someone tried hitting air for a minute to get a sense of the proc rate. He hit proc’ed it 21 times in that minute. That’s a lot! I don’t really expect this to carry over to patch 1.0.5 as it is now, but a modified version of it should carry over. So if you find some good, cheap AS pieces, be sure to pick them up!

Now here is the kicker: while the ring is account bound, there is no level requirement on it. So throw it in your stash and let your alts use it!

  1. Sweet walk-through man, really helpful.
yeah for it to be perfect you would want Crit chance, Resist to all, attack speed, and maybe armor.

    1. Drop rate depends on the monster power as I mention in the article. While it isn’t 10% per monster power level, it’s close enough to that to use as a rule of thumb.

      1. No, its not.

Its 100% increase in Magic Find, it will actually double your chance to get those.

If the drop rate in MP0 is about 5%, playing in MP10 will make it 10% (+100%).

        Pretty much Diablo basics…

        1. No its not! For unique items like the keys and the ingredients for the ring, the drop rate is low on mp0 and gets a 10% more for each mp to a sure chance on mp10

          1. Not correctly right Terena.
With MP level 0 gold find and magic find is at normal 100%, for each MP level your magic and gold find goes up 25% in inferno. Plus if you have gear with magic and gold find in them it goes up more with a better chance to get stuff. Higher magic find % better stuff is drop.

    1. Nice. Of course it also depends on your DPS :) If you can run it on MP 10, then you might as well do that, since you are guaranteed a part.

      1. Yes, but this isn’t character sheet dps we are talking about. This is about dps and efficiency. Having high run speed would bias to lower levels as you would have less down time between monsters. Whereas higher MP levels don’t require as much run speed since you are spending less time finding mobs and more time killing them.

    1. KeyWarden DROPS KEYS .. and the hellfire ring IS NOT a drop its a item u create at the jeweller with the pieces u get from uber bosses… the key wardens give u keys to create the infernal machine… the machine creates portals to the boss’s…

    2. Its kinda funny when people like you just talk bullshit when you say you have 412% mf, when blizzard has announce the mf cap is 300% from items or Plvl and 375 with NV….so stop bullshitting….

      1. bengt I read the lates daiblo 3 reviews on magic find, the cap they put for MF is 425% not 300%, so if he has MF at 412% he not over the cap, now you need to retrack your words, because I have also talk to blizzard to find out if the cap was at 425% for magic find. and they even told me yes that review was correct.

  2. I have gathered NV stack 5 and have fought and killed Sokahr many times but she still didn’t drop the key. True I’m not using monster power but when I use it I get killed. Still I should have gotten his key by now. When will I get the stupid key????

    1. No keys will drop if you are at MP 0, so you need to crank it up to MP 1 or 2 and yes for each MP level the monster do get harder. So if your gear is good for MP 0 and you get killed in MP 1 you need better gear.

      1. Yes they can, i just got a random key from killing a keywarden with no MP . Running my friend through some levels and i got 1. No MP, just 5 stacks of NV.

  3. Call me stupid, or old and stupid, but can you get the stuff you need when you play solo? MP is what, Monster power?? Valor Stack??? No idea… I made level 60 and have leveled up several times since then, they call it something else. How do I make a machine if I play alone? I bought the the ring of Hellfire and taught it to the jewel dude and I read how to get the stuff above but it’s all latin to me. could someone say in plain language what all of this stuff is and how do I do it? I would really appreciate it. Thank-you. Jon

  4. Will the portals stay open if I leave the game?
I’m assuming they will stay open until the uber bosses are killed, is that correct?

Also, I assume you can farm for multiple copies of the keys, so you can get a couple of sets before opening a portal.

Finally, are the plans destroyed when you create the portal, or do you keep the plans but only have to make key runs once you have the plans?

    Thanks in advance.

    1. Portals DO NOT stay open if you leave the game. make sure you select the right MP for your uber boss fight BEFORE you open the portal.

Also, yes, you should have at least 3 sets of portals before you open them so that you can open all of them in the same game.

Finally, plans for the portal device are NOT destroyed. You teach it to the blacksmith once, and you’re good to go.

  5. If you get killed while fighting the ubers does the fight reset (ubers revert to full health) or can you revive and keep going until you’ve killed them?
