Patch 1.0.4 buffed Trail of cinders immensely. Try it out!
The full patchnotes to patch 1.0.4 mentioned a buff to Trail of cinders, so that it will do 1500% of weapon damage over 3 seconds. On the surface it might seem like a lot, but a lot of other skills look good, but turn out sucky. So is this the case with Trail of cinders?
Not even close!
Trail of cinders makes for easy and fun farming
Granted, this works best with good gear, but that is always the case. Natalya’s set has a huge disc regen stat as a 4 piece bonus, but getting 4 good pieces of that piece of gear can be costly. However, if you have a good high-DPS weapon, then you can get 4 pieces of mediocre Natalya and go to town with Trail of Cinders:
The beauty of using Vault as your main damage dealer, is that it is a defensive skill. So you get a great defensive skill with a great offense built in to it! That is pretty awesome! Combine it with Smokescreen (lingering fog) and Preparation (backup plan) for some extra utility and power and then fill out the rest of your skills as your gear and playstyle allows.
When you look at the top 25 paragon level Demon hunters, 20 out of 25 use vault with trail of cinders, so it is a very popular skill and rightly so.
Using Trail of Cinders for leveling paragon
Besides working great against elites and bosses, you can also use it to great effect on thrash mobs. It is after all an AOE skill and it is semi spammable (with the proper gear), so you can use it for farming both gold and paragon XP, if you are trying to level paragon levels fast. This works especially well in Arreat craters against the huge masses of scorpions (thanks Paul John Angus on the Facebook group for pointing that out), but any place with lots of mobs in tight spots is great for this tactic. Siegebreaker runs or keep farming in act 3 is great as well, since you have a good combination of elites and thrash mobs during a Siegebreaker run, and you have lots of packs of mobs if you farm the keep at the beginning of Act 3.
So give Trail of cinders a try, if you are getting tired of the same hungering arrow DH build.
