Using Covetous Shen, your jeweler to make money in D3 patch 1.0.3

Use your jeweler to make money in Diablo 3 in the new patch

The next patch that is going to hit Diablo 3 is patch 1.0.3, or the loot patch.

It promises to boost the loot of the lower acts of Inferno, make the game a bit easier in group play and most important of all, it will make gem combining cheaper at the lower levels. The lower levels in this case means up to square gems.

This is great news and something we can really use to make money!

Make money in D3 patch 1.0.3 by acting now!

People have a tendency to be totally on the here and now, and not really care about the near future. Planning ahead is for wussies and nerds. Well, at Diablo3farming planning ahead is also for people who want to make money on the D3 AH.

Through the history of MMOs patch notes have been a source of change and profit opportunities. Usually you know what is going to happen a few weeks in advance and which items, classes or areas that are going to be affected. This is also the case in Diablo 3, even though this is the first “proper” non-hotfix patch.

The patch is expected to hit late June, so you have two weeks to prepare for it. The biggest change is obviously the jeweler and that is also the biggest potential for profit.

Covetous Shen will be your best friend

Right now you can get square gems cheap. This is partly because htey drop like candy, but also because it costs so damn much to combine AND you need three of them. And on top of that, a lot of people are farming Inferno and getting flawless square gems and selling those for cheap.

In patch 1.0.3 you only need 2 gems, 2 tomes of jewelcrafting and 100 gold to make a flawless square gem. Tomes of jewelcrafting swing wildly in price, but you can get them for around 300-400 gold with a bit of patience. Square emeralds are the most popular right now, with a price range of 150-250 gold. The other 3 gems are around 60-80 gold a piece. These prices also swing wildly. Yesterday I bought up square emeralds at 100 gold and sold them later that day for 320-350 gold. This how you can profit from the patch 1.0.3 scenario in Diablo 3.

Square gems will at least double in price at the D3 AH

Right now flawless square emeralds are selling for 2500 gold. I expect this price to stay pretty stable, since the supply is pretty constant from farming. We might see a bit of a drop in price with patch 1.0.3 since people start combining gems to make flawless square gems and throw them on the market, thus increasing supply and dropping prices. This will only be temporary, since this supply comes from cheap square gems, that will go up in price, so that the price of: 2 square gems + 2 tomes of jewelcrafting + crafting fee = 1 flawless square gem. The price of the flawless square gem will maybe drop a bit, but we will see a much bigger increase in the price of square gems, most notably emeralds.

Realistically, the price of flawless square emeralds could drop to 2000 gold. Tomes of jewelcrafting won’t change much, but might go a bit up in price due to increase in demand. 400-500 gold for a tome would be my guess. The crafting fee will be lowered to 100 gold. 2 tomes + crafting fee = 1000 gold. This means that for the price of square gems + tomes + fee to equal the price of a flawless square emerald worth 2000 gold, the square gems would need to cost 500 gold a piece. That’s a 100% profit right there.

I expect you can make the same on the other gems as well. Rubies are a bit iffy, so I would stay away from them. But Topaz and Amethyst is a pretty safe bet. Worst case scenario is that you have a lot of gold tied up in gems and will have to wait for the price to rise because of gold inflation. In that case it is much better to be invested in gear and gems, so that you are able to sell it at the inflated prices a later point in time. This is just the same as my guide to making money on the US RMAH. Sell you gear now, buy it back later cheaper, when the novelty value wears off.

TLDR: Buy square gems now, wait for them to double in price, then sell. Buy emeralds at below 200 gold, Topaz and Amethyst at below 80 gold and stay away from rubies. That is how you make money on gems in Diablo 3!

  1. Prices won’t go up, prices will drop drastically. Normal diamonds are cheaper to craft… so Flawless diamonds are cheaper to craft… so [...] flawless squared diamonds are cheaper to craft… AND you only need 2 gems per craft, not 3 as by now… so the demand drops too, prices fall even more.

Best advice would be to sell stockpiled diamonds before everybody else does.

    • Flawless squared gems will become cheaper, while the excess supply of the newly crafted gems gets soaked up. Once people have unloaded all their square gems in to flawless squared, the price of flawless squared gems will once again be determined by the drop rate in Inferno.

I also believe that the prices of flawless squared gems are a more powerful price determinant compared to the price of square gems. The price of square gems + crafting fee + tomes should equal the price of flawless square gems. If the price of flawless square gems drops a bit (the supply is after all increased), the price of square gems should increase.

      That’s my theory anyway ;)

    • You skip an important point here. People do not farm lower level crappy gems because they just drive fast through lower levels where they drop. That’s why the supply of them won’t allow for your “chain” crafting from lowest pieces.

  2. If you don’t mind may you please explain why rubys should be avoided?
Also do you think the price of squares will double and maintain or will it eventually sink? I take it you think it will rise anyway due to inflation?

    • Rubies are just really cheap at Star level. They are 150k-200k cheaper than the rest of the gems, so they aren’t very popular and you won’t be able to combine up with as big a profit margin as the other gems.

The price of squares should double and maintain. It might spike up and then drop a bit, but overall I believe we will see a doubling of price.

  3. Hey, good article – will you be updating this now that the patch is live?

I’ve spotted huge changes in tome of jewelcrafting prices… ~2000/1
could this be due to more people farming Inferno and getting tome of secrets?

  4. Wow.. first time checking the gems after the patch is live and square emeralds are back at ~200 piece from (highest) ~700 piece. First they raised from 300 to 700 and back to 200. All this happened in 12 hours. Are they still going to rise, or…? Because flawless emerald is also at very low price, ~1200. I did notice too that ALL the gems have significally lost their price. Didn’t quite expect this huge drop.

    • There’s huge variance in the market, which is great for those that follow it and get to know the swings. It usually rises in the evening, but there is always extra movement in markets right after big news, or in this case patch 1.0.3 hit.

      • Lol i still have 1000′s of squares worth little now. I missed that 700g sell time :( Damn my stupid real life.

  5. Also, do you think this incoming buff on legendary items will make the legendary blacksmith plans more valuable? Since now it’ll make better legendaries and people should actually afford to upgrade their crafting etc.

    • Yes, I do believe it will. While I haven’t followed the BS recipes that closely, I do know that gem recipes have increased 200-300% over the last few weeks. I don’t think this trend will continue, since this is mostly because people have been able to farm more gold per hour, but all recipes should increase in price as time goes on. This is due to inflation and the fact that people start crafting more and crafting becomes more viable.

  6. I see chipped gems for 500+ gold and not one square being sold. Flawless squares are 900? Tomes of secrets are sub 500 and pages of jewelcrafting are 1500. Wtf is going on?
