Make money on legendaries when D3 patch 1.0.3 hits

One possible way of making money on legendaries retroactively

The preview patch notes of patch 1.0.3, promises better loot at the lower levels at Inferno. It also promises better and easier farming of those levels. But one of the most exciting bits of news in this preview, was about legendary items. Currently craptastic pieces of gear, but that is set to change!

Legendaries will be buffed in a later patch

Legendaries are underwhelming currently, but the dev team are aware of this. After patch 1.0.3 hits, they are going to reveal more information about what is going to happen to legendaries. Whatever hte case may be, they can only get better. Sadly these changes won’t happen retroactively, so you can’t scoop up cheap legendaries and the resell them after the patch hits.

However, there is one possible way you might be able to benefit retroactively.

Unidentified legendaries could be the golden key!

Diablo 3 making money on legendaries

It could be a longshot, but unidentified legendaries could make you piles of gold!

This is a longshot, but is sure beats vendoring your legendaries or selling them for cheap on the AH. It all comes down to when the stats of an item are determined: are they determined when the item drops or when it is identified? I believe the identifying process works like a second drop for the weapon, so the stats are in fact not determined at the first drop. It isn’t until you ID the item, that you get the stats on it. If that is the case, then you have hit the jackpot.

If you keep all your legendaries unidentified and then wait to ID until the legendary patch hits, then their stats are rolled after the new table and thus will receive higher and better stats. This translates to making more money on your legendaries.

Here’s how to spin it to make gold

If you don’t ID your legendary drops, there is a chance you can get to roll their stats after the new table. Better stats = more gold.

Be on the lookout to buy unidentified legendaries. You are taken a huge risk on the stats here, so demand a hefty discount. You can’t buy them on the AH, but you can possibly trade them in person. I haven’t really tried this, since everyone always IDs their drops. Please chime in below, if you have tried it.

Worst case scenario here is that you up with a bunch of legendaries a month or two down the line. In that period of time, we will have seen more players hit the later acts of Inferno and more gold will have entered the economy. This in turn translates to higher prices when you sell items. So no matter what, it’s a win-win situation!

Now get farming, ya lazy bum!

  1. Interesting concept but unless you find those legendaries yourself, I don’t see how you can buy them from people. After all, the first instinct when you get such a rare drop is to identify it immediately.

    • Do you think it would be worth it to invest in legendary blacksmithing recipes? could prolly turn a nice profit when the buffs go out.

      • If you follow the recipes on the AH, then you could buy them on dips and don’t use them. If the buffs to crafted legendaries aren’t that great, then you could resell them.

  2. Not true @above.
When you Instantly roll a legendary with an 80% chance of getting a bad roll, you automatically lose money.

If you sell it Unidentified, you get more money than you would if it had bad stats.

For instance, I sold someone a Unid Ammy from A1 Inferno, it rolled trash stats and 51 Level Requirement. I made 100k.

  3. Cool, thought of this before. That I wanted to sell my legendaries and unique un-id. Then they announce this, and i decided to keep mine.
    Great ideas :)

  4. Um I remember them stating if you find an unidentified piece of item. The stats were already predetermined. It’s just they wanted the player to ID to keep the magic of finding good gear. I could be wrong but Jay Wilson or a Blue did state that.

    • It’s possible that they might be IDed at first drop. No matter what you might as well wait for them to buff legendaries and then ID it.

    • well, if it applies to legendaries, it should also apply to rares. However, rares aren’t set to get buffed after patch 1.0.3, so you don’t really stand to gain anything.

      • Read on a post on bnet that this change is due with the pvp patch 1.1 late 2012. Are you sure it is gonna happen on 1.03?

        • It might be a bit unclear in the above article, but it is going to happen AFTER patch 1.0.3. So not in patch 1.0.3, but they are starting to look at legendaries and PVP after they are done working on 1.0.3

  6. well, first off, legendaries will be buffed in the PvP patch, NOT in 1.0.3.
second, Bashiok said on twitter that item stats are rolled when they drop – identifying does NOT roll the stats, so waiting to identify until the patch hits will NOT help you.

  7. Ever hear of the unID hack? You can see the stats of unID items before you actually ID them. I’ve tried it. it works. All loot stats are deteremined at the drop. Not upon ID. If your suggestion were true, then the unID hack wouldn’t work. Sit in trade chat for 30 min. Everyone that posts UnID items gets flamed cause everyone knows of the hack. I.E. everyone assumes you ID your “unID” items before you tried to sell them.
